Well known in Europe, RB has decided to attack the North America market by opening offices in Texas to better serve their customers. Well known RB factory driver, Reno Savoya has moved in USA and he gladly accepted to answer those few questions.
MyRCBox.com: What is the best usage and what performance can we expect for each RB .21 engines?
The Buggy 11 is the perfect evolution of the B10 and more recently the Shark 10. This engine is the top of the range for buggy. It’s a 5 ports with the famous RB Multi Exhaust System, which deliver a great power band. The fuel economy is reduced in order to reach the 10 minutes pit line, and with more torque than the 2010 line, the B11 provides a great linearity and smoothness. It will suit all the buggy drivers looking for top quality, torque and performances.
Same basis as the B11, the Cross 11 is a 3 ports. Depending on the tracks, the X11 can be a really good compromise between power and fuel mileage. It will be really adapted to smaller tracks or dusty conditions, but also for smooth drivers looking for fuel economy than pure speed.
Newcomer in the line, the F11 adopt the same crankcase as the B11 and X11. It’s the most powerful of the RB line for .21 off-road. Actually, the F11 is boosted by a 7 ports sleeve with a really aggressive on-road crankshaft. It’s a monster that will suit all the RPMs lovers. You were struggling to get something out of your truggy engine? This one is for you!!
Made in Taïwan, this engine has the best quality-price combo on the market. Delivered with a 5 ports prepared piston sleeve, state of the art machined crankshaft, this engine is really powerful, and will satisfy most of the drivers, even me!! The mileage expected is not as good as the B11 or X11, but every driver could expect between 8.30 and 10 minutes!
Small brother of the K10, the Sport 10 is the cheapest off-road engine of the line. It keeps the same quality and precision as the K10, but less work is done on the piston sleeve and the crankshaft. It’s the perfect engine to start competition or simply bash around!!!
MyRCBox.com: What break in procedure do you recommend or use for RB engines?
Reno Savoya: My engines are stock, and broken in at the factory on a bench. However, here is the recommended break-in procedure:
- 5 tanks on the starterbox or bench “japanese style”, full throttle with the top end fully opened, the wheels should barely spin
- 5 tanks on the track running rich
- tanks on the track getting progressively to the running temperature and setting
There is no need to replace anything after break in!! Our engines are designed to last between 7 and 10 gallons, so no need to freak out after break-in!Enjoy!
MyRCBox.com: Some engines perform better when run hotter than others, what is the typical temperature range for RB engines?
Reno Savoya: As RB engines are always pretty tight for a longer life, the temperature range can be a little bit over the others. The running temperature will always be between 200F and 260F. It’s also very important to tune the engine with smoke and noise. Sometimes it’s more important than the temperature itself…
MyRCBox.com: What glow plugs do you recommend under what conditions?
Reno Savoya: We always recommend to use RB plugs on RB engines. Many consumers prefer to use competitors plugs, but unfortunately, they are often not adapted to the head button, and the performances will not be optimum. We definitely recommend to use RB N°6 plugs for our engines. In hot conditions (90F and over), you could use N°7 which will be less fragile.
MyRCBox.com: When using RB engines in a truggy, which header/tuned pipe combo do you recommend?
Reno Savoya: Buggy or truggy, I use the same combo pipe/header. I use the 2087 pipe and the 204P manifold. The 204 offers an incredible amount of torque, in order to gear up and improve the traction of the car. However, on long tracks, we recommend to go with a shorter manifold (198P) for better top-end.
MyRCBox.com: RB now names their engines with the year of release, why there are no Sport 11 or Killer 11 engines?
Reno Savoya: As those engines were great in 2010, we didn’t have modifications to do on them for 2011, so we kept the same names. We think it’s also better for our “sport” line.
MyRCBox.com: RB has released a new tuned pipe, the 2087, what are the benefits of this new tuned pipe?
Reno Savoya: After many tests, releasing the 2087 is a real improvement. Our R&D team has proven that from the 2045 (which was already better than our competitors on our engines), the 2087 brings more torque for better ignition of power. Also, the technology allowed us to gain between 30 and 45 secs on the mileage depending on track conditions.
MyRCBox.com: The K10 and S10 engines are made in Taiwan, are they any differences between those engines and those made directly by RB?
