In the last few years, we have seen many new innovations in the R/C industry. Some of them stayed while others just passed. One of the most successful innovations of the decade has certainly been the LiPo batteries and the brushless motors. Since their first appearance, they have become the standard in electric racing. We can’t imagine someone running a brushed motor and NiMh batteries anymore. Today, LiPo/Brushless combo are available for any type of vehicles on the market, from the mini 1/18th to the biggest 1/5th scale vehicles.
Another major innovation has been the short course trucks. Despite of what many people can think about them, the short course trucks have had a major impact in the RC industry. It first started with the Traxxas Slash and then all major manufacturers have released their own short course truck. No matter your preferences, the manufacturers offer a wide variety of models. You can choose about any combinations possible, electric, nitro, gasoline, 1/18th, 1/10th, 1/8th, 1/5th, 2wd or 4wd.
So what’s the next big thing? At the last Nuremberg toy fair, HPI Racing has surprised the R/C world by announcing a new gasoline engine. The new engine is slightly larger than traditional nitro .21 engines which doesn’t stop HPI from installing the new mill right into a HPI Savage XL and Hot Bodies D8T for the show. No real information about the release date yet but I’m sure the new engine will interest a lot of people, me being the first. At this moment, no one really knows how the engine will perform but this is the kind of innovation that can change a lot of things in R/C. Just remember the impact of the LiPo batteries have had in the industry.
What do you think will be the next big thing???
