A record turnout of 430 drivers from 14 states made the trek to R/C Excitement in Fitchburg, MA for the Jconcepts 2013 Fall Indoor Nationals. Pro drivers Ryan Maifield, newly crowned World Champion Steven Hartson, and Dustin Evans were on hand to represent their sponsors, compete for the coveted title, and put on a good show for fans and participants.
The schedule called for two qualifying rounds on Saturday with an additional round on Sunday, followed by the main events. With so many entries there was plenty of time for car preparation and setup changes between rounds.
After three rounds of qualifying were completed, Team Associated/Reedy factory driver Ryan Maifield sat at the top of the time sheets in both the 4WD Modifed and SCT Modified classes. A single A Main would determine the champion, which made starting from the pole a huge advantage.
In the SCT Modified A Main, Maifield fought off an early challenge from Dustin and eventually cruised to victory with his Reedy-powered SC10.2. After suffering a poor start, teammate Steven Hartson recovered nicely to finish in third place.
Maifield’s great start in the 4WD Modified A Main allowed him to build a significant second lead over Steven Hartson. Even though Hartson could match the fast laps of Maifield, his deficit was too great to overcome. Maifield’s Reedy-powered B44.2 crossed the finish line first, with Hartson joining him on the podium with a second-place finish.
Thanks to the participants and to R/C Excitement for hosting another excellent event!
